Fannings

A word used to describe small, grainy particles of tea that are left over after higher grades of tea are gathered to be sold.

Although fannings are considered the lowest grades of tea, they are sought after for tea bags as they provide a good quick infusion. In addition, the fannings of high-quality teas can still be more flavourful than whole leaves of cheaper teas.
