Brick Tea

Also known as Tablet Tea.

A phrase that refers to common grades of Japanese and Chinese tea leaves mixed with dust and stalk, steamed and compressed into small bricks. These bricks were originally used by Asian travellers as convenient way to transport the tea, and were also used to barter for trade goods. The bricks can be shaved and brewed with salt and butter and then served as a soup.
